I don't think that you should make the assumption that the building should be gray. I would say that it is close to boxcar red. There is a color shot of the shop peeking over the roundhouse in Dorman's "Durango to Alamosa and Salida", page 153. The shop appears to be very close in color to the drop bottom gons in the shot. This very same photo of 361 is presented on page 161 of the same book and the boiler looks black. The domes are a very glossy black and the boiler is a duller black. It all depends upon how you shop the photo.
