Work has been progressing well on DRG 168 with focus on cylinder boring and checking crank pin quartering. Both cylinders will need a light boring to bring them back to round and true, but luckily the bores are not excessively out of tolerance, saving precious material in the casting. The boring set up was borrowed from SLW (instead of using the C&TS boring bar) because it originally came from the DRGW Alamosa shops, and it seemed appropriate to use a historic tool to work on this historic locomotive. I have included a couple photos of the bar in place and a link to a video of it running to show how everything works. The quartering is in the process of being checked, but so far no surprises. The photo below shows the SLW Ashton Quartering Gauge being used. This tool is basically an inclinometer that is use the measure the degrees on each side of the drive axles. By adding the two values together, one arrives at the degree of offset which should be 90 degrees or close to that value. Once the final numbers are in we will update you, but a quick reading appears to have all pins within specifications.
