The very first question that must be asked about a Black and White photo is what type of B&W film was used, Pan or Ortho? Othro films do not see the color spectrum as well as Pan based B&W films because of a shift in the gray scale. Then what filter was used when shooting the photo? And then the same question must be asked about what type of Print Paper was used to make a B&W print as the same problem applies for the print paper as well.

As an example, the Aussies use a dayglow orange decal of the Kangaroo on their planes. While USN VAP-61 had a detachment in Townsville a set of the large Decals was put on one of our planes and using Plus X film it disappeared against an off white paint used on the RA3B's. In order for it to be seen a dark yellow filter had to be used for it to show up on the negative and the print.
