You answered your own question. The Barrel Transfer was used to empty the contents of narrow gauge high side gons into standard gauge cars. Coal from Crested Butte, and limestone from Monarch were the primary items being transferred. The process was hard on the side stakes and top board of the cars, which is why so many of the surviving high side gons have had the side stakes spliced.
