Just to add another couple of ideas to what has been offered by those more knowledgeable than me;
Whatever you do, and the method you choose (i.e loaning, donating etc.), spell it all out in writing to the last detail what can be done with your materials. The current curator may agree 100% with your wishes but a new one ten years from now may have different ideas, like selling off some of your stuff to bring in money.
Make sure that any objects put out on display are protected from sun damage. I've seen timetables with beautiful pictures on the covers containing reds ruined within a year from the sun fading out the inks.
