You can couple a full size to a ¾ size coupler several ways. The latest method used was the Aluminum overlay adaptor built by the EBT but the EBT previously changed the knuckle on the ¾ coupler with one which presented a full size hand that the standard gauge car (re-trucked) could couple to in the 1920s. The knuckle has the “C to Q” cast into it. The height of the car was controlled by the design of the re-trucking set of wheels used under the SG car.
You can take a full size knuckle and slice about ¾ of an inch off the back side of it and that knuckle will couple into the ¾ size coupler. This exposes some of the inner casting holes but they can be filled or the opening capped with a little spot welding, and it will look like it belongs there. There was no strength loss as the full size knuckle is over size compares to the ¾ size coupler and exceeds it strength, even after the slicing.
Most would not believe the extent that many narrow gauge railroad moved SG cars over their tap lines and logging railroads to get them to the mills or camps. I collect the castings or photos of the casting that were made to match the problem.
