Back in 1968 we were shooting the D&RGW in early June. We started with 478 on freight to Farmington on day 1. Day 2, 498 took the freight to Chama(we chased to Gato). At chama 483 and 493 were there from Alamosa.
498 took the train west, before we chased 483-493 back toward Alamosa.
Earl told me that later that day 478 was sent light to Gato, to help 498 back to Durango. The K28's were pressed into service a few times since only a few of the bigger engines were operational the final years. Sometimes at the end of the tourist season when a K28 needed servicing, they would run it on freight back to Alamosa for the winter.
