At the end of WWII, when the USRA was returning control of the railroads, the USRA sent a KCS motive power superintendent to do a study and survey of the D&RG lines...both narrow gauge and standard gauge. One of his recommendations was to build articulateds for the D&RG narrow gauge and to rebuild some standard gauge engines to narrow gauge (ala K37). He also recommended building steel ng passenger cars with side center doors.
