Yes that is true,there were many different styles of support structures,roof's and finials, also to note is that earlier tanks had flat bands, and later, bands were made out of 7/8" rod that was threaded on the ends. On earlier tanks round bands were added nearer the bottom to compliment the older style bands, the reason for this was the point of atachment for the adjusting rods on the flat bands were riveted on to the flat material and as time went by with seasonal expansion and contraction were prone to faliure and the bands would either slide down or fall off.While being part of the crew that built the new tank in Chama I learned alot of the finer points of building a water tower.One thing I thought kinda cool was that you never fill a new tank to fast giving the redwood time to expand from the bottom up.If you fill it to fast and there are bound to be leaks a small leak can turn into a major leak as the water pressure erodes the joint beetween the staves.
