It is not the "wrong" shape, it is just smaller than the standard 50,000 gal D&RGW water tank. The D&RGW replaced the standard tank at several places on the narrow gauge with smaller tanks at such places as Villa Grove, Jack's Cabin, Arboles (with part of the tender from a standard gauge engine), etc. The reason they did this was that the K engines had larger tender water capacity and did not need to take on water as often as the C class engines. Most of the time, engines did not need to stop for water at La Jara. Probably only when waiting for a meet with another train or doing switching along the line.
