Stub Switches, of course, go back to the earliest days of railroading.
They remained in service on yard tracks until the very end. Reliability and safety demanded that they be replaced at the end of the 19th century.
A stub can be built by a blacksmith and a track gang with a hacksaw. Points require a long bed milling machine and the power to drive it, not the common resources of poineer roads a long way from industry. Eventually, the standards improved, hardware and tooling to manufacture the hardware could be brought in by rail.
