Stub switches,
They where generally discontinued between 1890 and 1920, although on the narrow guage they are still used. I'm not sure how long they lasted on the broad guage.
Improper alighnment is their main disadvange, also as speed increases the more dangerous they are. I've been told that 65lb. rail is the heaviest rail that can be used in a stub switch. We have a stub switch, at the Museum, with 65lb. rail and a Harp switch stand. After several attemps at tweeking, we finally got it to throw fairly easy.
As for the 3-way, we have moved it off the mainline, and now have it back in service. The biggest problem we've had with the 3-way is alignment. It didn't want to align in all positions. I am hoping to solve this, after we complete our current building program. The 3-way at the Museum is right behind the woman with RWR, in the photo of the Museums 3-way. keith
