Hi,
I have built a 4.75" gauge stub double-slip switch in my backyard. There was an article with photos published in Modeltec c1990. At the current time, I can not locate the Modeltec article nor the original photos. In the mid-1990s, a friend found a photo in "Encyclopedia of North American Railroads" page 15 of a stub-double slip taken in Washington DC just after the Civil War (SG of course).
I do not recall anyone using a stub double-slip in narrow gauge. It would have had to have been used in places where space was at a premium and the need for industrial spurs such as in Denver or other large town. Maybe the Revere Beach and Lynn (Boston) may have had one but space was not too much at a premium when the narrow gauges were laid out in Denver.
2) There is no need to worry about if the prototype had them if you have a plausible need for one. My Live Steam stub double-slip later had three of the four routes into it dual gauged for 7.5" gauge equipment. I had a space need for the double-slip in the back yard. You just need one three-way harp switch stand to operate it.
It is a lot easier to build than a point double-slip; 8 points are not needed. Fot s single gauge one, all you need are two frogs (not necessarily the same number) and rail.
I'll look for photos to post. Currently the stub dual-gauge double-slip is covered in ivy and not easily seen.
