The original batch were built this way, then subsequent batches alternated between streamlined and unstreamlined they finally all were "defrocked". 6229 (non operational) was restreamlined recently. I can understand the problems the streamliners would have caused but just being able to see one "as built" is amazing. This one went to the USA (New York? Worlds fair) in 1939 and didn't look totally stupid with a headlight fitted. I've personally seen it(6229) running a few years ago - it ran from London to Glasgow (I saw it fairly early in the morning near Rugby having worked out were it would be when daylight made an appearence). I subsequently got to speak to one of the support crew who implied that it was running at a speed close to 100 mph descending from Shap towards Carlisle - he was quite happy to have experienced this from the support coach rather than the footplate
