Fuel type and firebox wear/damage

Of the three most common types of fuel, wood, coal or oil, which would cause the most wear or damage to a firebox?
Also, being from Louisiana originally where the sugar railroads used cane waste (bagasse) for fuel, was this a particularly damaging fuel?
