In 1981, George "Steve" Connor, son of James Connor, was assistant superintendant and director of safety, rules and training on the newly re-named Durango & Silverton Narrow Guage Railroad. His son, Richard, started in April as a fireman trainee, two days before I hired on as an engineer. Richard and I worked much of the summer together till he was promoted to engineer. George was in charge of marking up the crew assignment board every day, and if I remember correctly, he spelled their name "Connor".

I wish I had thought to take a photo of that historic crew assignment board with my name marked up on it. John West has a great photo of the board, probably from the 60's, as Andy Payne is marked up. I'm not sure, but I believe the board got vaporized in the great roundhouse fire of 1989.
