My recent visit to the Sumpter got me interested in its history. One challenge has been to find a map that shows the entire system when it went all the way to Prairie City, in particular in relation to the modern road system. Mal Ferrell's 1967 book has a pretty good map as far Austin, but the details are difficult to follow and I don't think it shows the modern roads very well. I also find it interesting that some of the "important" stations on the Sumpter don't seem to be easy to find on Google maps. And some of the mills towns along the way seem to have disappeared entirely.
Are there better maps available, and is there an expanded history. One of the things that intrigues me about the Sumpter is that it hauled a lot of cut lumber from mills along the line, as opposed to just hauling logs to the mills at Baker City.
