To the TM's defense, the two big GE's should have pulled it up the hill with no trouble. The train was only about 1700 tons and the GE's are good for at least 1200 tons each. I don't know if the rail was wet from dew or what was the trouble. The engineer did say he ran out of sand. Once underway, we went right up the hill without any trouble or slipping. The TM did ask one of the regular hill engineers if they could pull it. The train was left on the main just east of La Veta on Fri because 2 of the 3 units on the train needed to be left in La Veta to pull the passenger train on Saturday. They used 2 engines with one on each end to ease switching and run-a-round difficulties at Fir.
