The longer main rods advantage is it will have less angularity as it pushes and pulls against the pin on the driver, thus less friction (the rod rotates less on the crosshead pin) and a better mechanical advantage ( because of less angle ) against the driver pin. The disadvantage is the longer rod is heavier, thus the extra weight pounds against the bearing harder.
