Doug,

That was a view west at the east end of Enola yard just west of the Rt 5 overpass.
In today’s world you would be in major trespass on NS RR.

You are looking at 152# per yard rail, only smaller than the 155# rail, which was the largest rail ever made for main line track.

You can see the difference of the two by viewing the joint bar, as the top thickness of the bar is very wide on the 155 but only a slight bit wider than the rest of the bar on the 152#. Both rails are 8" high and will trip anyone who is not used to its heights as they try to step over a rail. Railroader must NEVER step on the head of a rail as it is slippery. It was also a hell of a job lifting your body 8" up and then down to cross a rail that way and get called in for an investigation when the Boss was looking for his quota of efficiency checks.

That D&RGW car Very likely came through Alamosa out of the San Luis valley as being the very origin of most potato shipment using that class of car. When you work in a yard like this for years, you can identify every train by it content, and when you have access to the way bill information, you can see the traffic for certain industries on favorite spur lines and also know where a high percentage of the destination industries for each car in an entire train. Traffic study was fun.
