Whenever I got on an engine after the Hostlers got done with it, I always tried to get the cab cleaned up, make sure there was an adequate supply of waste and supplies.
Then I'd get busy and clean the steam and air gauge glasses and windows, fill the longneck oilcan and tallowpot, and get the "squirthose" work done to wash away all the coal dust and wet the coal pile before the hogger got there....
That way you didn't get anybody all wet, and it made 'em happy when you handed down a full oilcan from a clean cab so they could get on with their inspection and oiling around.
Definitely, a clean cab and a happy hoghead makes a happy engine crew.
On the other hand, If the hogger ain't happy, nobody is happy!
