The October issue of "Railway Magazine" in the UK contains details of a 42 inch gauge US Army Transportation Corps S160 2-8-0 which has been discovered by a group of British enthusiasts in the Russian controlled island of Sakhalin. Apparently the loco (which still carries its USATC number 2964) was one of 60 S160s which were built for the Russian 60 inch Gauge system and were subsequently rebuilt for 42 inch gauge for use on the (formerly Japanese) island after World War 2. While there are a number of standard gauge S160s preserved in Europe, no other narrow gauge (or for that matter 60 inch gauge) examples are known to survive.
