K-36 smokebox front

I have noticed that almost every k-36 has what appears to be a patch of some sort on the bottom of the smoke box front. The 480 has one that extends from one side to the other compared to the 488 which has three small ones, it seems that evey k-36 has at least one. Why were they put on?
Maybe El Coke or Earl can shed some light on this. Thanks in advance.
