Actually, the Great Chicago Fire occurred in 1871, just two years after completion of the Transcontinental Railroad.

The Columbian Exposition (1892-3) was publicized as celebrating the 400th anniversary of Columbus's voyage, but everyone knew that it was also Chicago's "coming out" party - celebrating their recovery from the fire.
