Amen, and well said. having worked with the state of Texas, and the ASME, I can tell you that someone off the street who knows a little about rivited boilers knows more than most inspectors that will be asked to pass judgement on them. All of my stuff is inspected, but there has aways been a learning curve on new inspectors.
I still question alot of these reports of "junk boiler," and until I see for myself the photos of the deterioration, staybolts, ect, I will continue to regard this as a low water event. By the way, had corrosion been the culprit, why didn't it let go at the mud ring(flange), where one would expect the most deterioration? If the crown was as poor as has been purported, there should also have been significant signs of grooving, ect in the shell and barrel. There has been no mention of it.
