I agree John. It is to bad theu couldn't have constucted a newer ash pit at another location and preserve the present one in its original state for interprative and historical purposes. When they quit using the sand house in Durango, that was the end of another original interpative possibility. I remember many days in the sand house shoveling wet sand into the hopper around the hot stove, then screening after it had dried. Not one of my favorite things to do, but now that I look back at it, I am glad I got to do it.
