Back before WW2, tires were made from 100% gum rubber from rubber trees. When the Japanese overran all of the plantations, it was the equal of the Manhattan Project to make synthetic rubber.

Those old tires only lasted about 4,000 miles and each one cost about one month's wages for the average working man. We have sure come a long way since then.
