There were also return flue boilers, where the firetubes actually bend around in a "U" shape. The firebox is at the bottom of one end, and the smokebox is at the top of the same end. There is only one tubesheet; the top half is for the smokebox end of the tubes; the bottom half the firebox end.
Many stationary and marine engines used these; and some traction engines:
Some of the early locomotives; such as "Puffing Billy", had a return flue boiler because they were inspired by stationary engine practice. But they rapidly disappeared from the locomotive scene as boilers grew larger.
