Don,
#5626 experienced a problem with the lubricator. The valve gear got so hot that when they got the engine stopped, some of the parts welded together. I had heard that they had to torch the main rod off the engine to move it off the mainline.
I wasn't there, but I remember my Dad coming home that night in Boulder talking about it. He'd gotten a call from Mickey Hansen, Road Foreman of Engines on the C&S.
On one of the Illini trips, Howard Fogg, my Dad, and a few other guys chartered an excursion on the C&S Northern Division with the big 5600 that was used to bring the excursion into Denver, while the group was in Durango.
There are pictures of the train, maybe the only time a 5600 ran North of Denver on the C&S. One coach and a caboose.
Very cool.
If it was in 1960, that would have been the last run of the 5626. I'll have to go back and check it out.
