While I agree that asthetically the non or minimally ballasted track was more interesting, the difference in the ride was noticibly different between the two sections. I rode a photo freight in October of 2007 and You could feel the difference. After spending something like 10 hours on the train the ballasted section was most welcome and made the return to Chama much easier to take.
