Well, I traveled Route 66 when I was a kid on a summer, family trip to Arizona (no air conditioning of course). To me the most interesting thing about it was following the activity on the AT&SF while I constantly lamented the fact that I was just a few years too late to see steam on the line. I remember the tacky motels, restaurants and even tackier tourist traps.
I have been back to some of the towns along the old route in more recent times, and some of them haven't changed all that much after many years. Still, except for the nostalgia I have for all things past, I have no great interest in Route 66 in particular nor for that relatively recent era.
My nostalgia is mostly for what came earlier.
