Hi

I have just joined this forum and is catching up on all the interesting discussions.

Most of the pipe gondolas were converted from high side gondolas classes 12-15. They where 32' over the end sills. The idler cars were needed to separate the pipe gondolas since the pipes where longer than the pipe gondolas.

Most of the photos shows pipe gondolas with the pipes stick out by 3' to 4' on each end. This would add up to pipe lengths just under 40'. This is also consistent with photos of the pipe cars rebuild from standard gauge 40' box cars.

Everetts response about 25', 30' and 35' pipe lengths was a surprise to me. I have earlier got the impression that the most pipes where just under 40'. The shorter 25' and 30' lengths would have fitted into the pipe gondolas without a need for idler cars. I can't remember seeing any photos like that. Does anyone have a link to an online photo or a reference to a photo in a book showing cars with the shorter lengths of pipes.
