Chris, what exactly is a tool joint?

I looked on Google and there are some images of "tool joints". They look like end covers. Are they to protect the threads on the pipe ends? Or are they a mechanical fastener and stay on the pipe?

Also I guess one end of the pipe is male and the other is female. I might be able to simulate this on our model pipe by using a tap and die.

4 1/2" drill pipe is exactly the pipe size I'm trying to simulate.

Oh on the banding, what type of banding is it? Just simple wrap around flat banding? Or something else?

Sometimes it's irritating when all my Rio Grande books (including the pictorial volume III, Gons, Boxcars and Flats) are in Colorado while I'm in Southern California for work at least until late May.
