Re: South/Central American Steam Questions

My first visit to Guatemala was in Nov. of '71. There were a couple of dozen bad order locomotives on the deadline in Guatemala City, about 6 in Escuintla and maybe 5 in Zacapa. It wasn't until my 6th & final visit in early '77 that the situation had changed. Some of the locomotives with good boilers had been sold to nearby fincas (plantations), and the deadlines were a lot shorter due to scrapping.

Deadline engines in late 1971 included:
Guatemala City
2-8-0
38, 105

2-8-2
151,152,155,157,162,164,166,170,179,190,191,192

Escuintla
2-8-2
169,187,189,
2-6-6-2
250,251

Zacapa
2-8-0
110
2-8-2
167,185,199,206

laying in the river near Agua Caliente was recently wrecked 2-8-2 195
