From my experience with them, all steam locomotives go into self destruct mode the minute you use them. Just the nature of the beast. It's fairly universal across the board.
WHen you are dealing with former logging engines, you're pretty much at the mercy of how the previous owner treated them. The present condition of Roaring Camps Climax and Shay 6 are proof of that one. Westside did some pretty creative stuff but generally took better than average care of their engines, with the possible exception of Ex WSL #3 which had all the cracks in its saddle filled with lead and they neglected to Norman Clark when he bought her. It was discovered when the heat at grade, melted every leak in the saddle wide open again.
