That's the "official" (original) length. Somehow, some time, the tail magically grew to a length that could turn an entire snowplow train without uncoupling. Shockingly, it happened to grow on the adjacent landowner's land (USFS/BLM/whatever), not the railroad's land.

Since the D&RGW was a helpless victim of this, it never bothered to correct the problem - or the records.
