Many people say it's YOU-ray. That's wrong. The proper pronunciation is Ooo-ray. Chief Ouray spoke Te-wa and Spanish. The Spanish phonetic spelling of his name was Uré, which would translate to Ooo-ray into English if done phonetically correctly. Of course, it got bastardized into YOU-ray by unknowing Anglos.
By the way, my wife's great-grandfather knew the Chief personally and the Chief pronounced his name, "Ooo-ray." There you go.
Also, if you live in Northern Colorado you're likely to call a Colorado resident a Coloradoan (the Fort Collins newspaper is "The Coloradoan"). Southern Colorado residents know this is balderdash and call themselves "Coloradans." After all, Mexico residents are not "Mexicoans," now are they?
