No doubt it would have been cheaper to build switchbacks. What this antique pencil-pusher failed to consider is what if it had becaom a busy mainline? Can you imagine Tehachapi Loop, Williams Loop, (fill in your own) being operate under heavy modern traffic as a switchback?

BTW - how would you plow heavy snow off the switchback while backing the train on a switchback? I'm sure a few 1000 feet of switchbacks could be economically covered by snowsheds!
