Ken, you are sure right about the maintenance.It helps prevent problems and also problems are discovered and fixed during maintenance.
The biggest part of my steam experience has been with the 15" locomotives and I have seen the hazards of no maintenance. Fortunately the small
equipment I have helped with was all soft plug equipped. As I told one operator when he blew two plugs the same day and thought there waas something wrong with the plugs, " The soft plugs were doing what they were supposed to do and you're Damn lucky they did."
When the water glass cocks were checked the top one was plugged giving him a false reading. Jim
