Thanks guys! I feel better knowing you like the updates.
Shane Its ok that you didn't like the single chime much, how ever I found something out yesterday that may make it sound better. I was reading a log book in the shop and it turns out that many years back they switched the whistle valves. In other words the valve under the 5 chime is the valve for the single chime. And the valve we fixed for the single chime is for the 5 chime. Why this was done I don't know. I also don't know how much different it would make the whistles sound. But the single chime valve under the 5 chime is smaller in diameter than the 5 chime valve.
Currently 340 and 41 both have the same 5 chime whistle. 340s whistle has a valve that is the same diameter as the bell, and 41s valve is smaller than the bell. 41s whistle is much loader, 340s is quieter and sounds a little more musical. Maybe when the single chime gets back from Colorado well have to tinker with the two, and maybe if we switch the valves back things will sound the way they should.
Todd Im glad you like 340 looks! But I have a question for you and anyone reading this.
What would you think if we repainter 340 to all black, no more green boiler?
This is just for my own thoughts, there no plans on painting anything at knotts, Im just wondering what you guys think. And RUSSO I know you would love to see the green stay! Again this is just something that was floating around in my thoughts.
