I myself hope to have the same chance someday. I'm 15 (in 7 hours, 16), and the biggest problem that I usually see is that the insurance will limit anyone in control of an engine to be at least 18. This will be in effect at most major lines, and many small ones. But, there are exceptions. The portola museum will let anyone operate an engine regardless of age. They must be pretty confident.
I'd say, go for it! From what I read, some think working on an engine is a pain in the a**, but others really enjoy it. As the old saying goes, don't knock it till you try it.
