John:
A while back, I spied a piece in the paper that Rio Arriba county was one of the fastest growing counties in the country, or something to the effect. Now, if memory serves, TA is the county seat of Rio Arriba county, of which Chama is a part: something did not fit. Though some folks appear to be building second homes in and around Chama, it does not appear to be experiencing what I would call a land rush!
So I consulted the sage web site, Wikipedia where I found that Rio Arriba extends from Chama west to Dulce and down to Espinola (sp?), and the latter is where all the growth must be, just outside Santa Fe. The Wiki site says that there are but three incorporated sites: Espinola (a city), Dulce (a town) and Chama (a village): TA, the county seat, does not appear to be incorporated according to the site! There are a bunch more areas listed, like Ghost Ranch, but overall it looks to be a quiet place.
Incidentally, my Grandfather was born in Chama in 1909 when New Mexico was still a territory. The courthouse in TA burned after he was born, and he had considerable difficulty proving his birth heritage in spite of military service during WWII.
