Hi Dan,
I fully agree! I learned how to work on track at the Rockhill Trolley Museum dual gauge track (at the East Broad Top, and continued on their track crew for many years. More recently I helped rebuild the ET&WNC through the Doe River Gorge, and go back there several times each year to maintain the track. This year a few of us rebuilt 150'+ of track from the ground up, regraded it with new ballast & ties and many new spikes - all by hand! Yes, definitely hard work, no pay, and great fun! Plus the satisfaction of knowing you've done a good job that will allow trains to run and people to enjoy themselves - safely!
Any chance of Eureka coming east to either the EBT or our 1.5 miles of ET&WNC track in Tennessee? (Just wishful thinking! I read your post above about transportation costs, etc.!)
Thanks for all you do to preserve such a wonderful part of American history!
Phil
