I'm not sure I should share this, but Jeff Ellingson (sp?) admitted during a conversation in '05 that the shade of green he used that year was a LOT lighter than that specified by the D&RGW standards in the 1930's. Apparently he had used the "official" shade a year or two before, and after just one trip the soot had rendered it indistinguishable from black.
From what I have seen here on the NGDF, the color used on #348 in Golden is pretty close to what was almost certainly used on the K-37's when first outshopped by Burnham, and possibly on the K-36's built by Baldwin - depending on what color "Russian Black" really was ...
