Thanks for being kind, ROW. Your pix pointed out very clearly that it's been far too long since I've visit the Tunnel. I'm still wrestling with forming an opinion on this new addition, not that it should make any discernable difference.
For the record, I first visited the Alpine Tunnel in 1959 driving (believe it or not) an MGA sports car, which made it without any dents or complaints. Afterwords I had lunch in a cafe in Pitkin and got to talking with the other customer there. That's when I found out about
DENVER, SOUTH PARK & PACIFIC. I promptly either ordered a copy, or bought one on the spot from my new found friend in the cafe, who had a stash in the trunk of his car. Either way, I still have it.
So if I wax a bit nostalgic about the South Park, and the Alpine Tunnel in particular I'm allowed. To this day, whenever I have a chance to visit the Tunnel it's like walking into an old cathedral.
