As a rule of thumb, any time the viewer has to search for the subject, the intention of the photo is lost. Color is usually easier, you don't have to bother with contrast and lighting nearly as much.

For some good scale emphasis shots study the photos of George Beam. He was a master with them. I'm sure he took many that didn't work while he was learning. We all do. eye popping smiley
