Right Steve, the smokebox door was opened before the shop door was opened, to check how much sand was in the box. You are right, the front end loaded was brought around, shop doors opened, sand shoveled out. You mention the engine being pulled out of the shop for the fire up, diesel 21 would have done that, and your pic of the cab proves my assuertion that the 9 usually had 30 pounds of steam the next morning. Thank you for posting the picture. For some reason, when the engine house was built, they did not put any smoke jacks in the roof for firing up inside. Very typically we would drag the engine outside for fire up.
