Not sure on the details but when Walter wanted a steam train to entertain his guests he found RGS 41 at Ridgway looking for a new home. Ed Randow and Roy Boucher (Master Mechanic and Superintendent, respectively) were getting ready to retire and California was a common destination point for old Colorado heads. I guess the whole deal was just too good to pass and so Ed came out to retire and run the trains and Roy put on the Conductor's outfit again. They both were around the line for several years.
Although Roy put us in the Parlor Car Chama when my Grandparents were visiting (Grampa was a D&RGW retiree and had a pass) back in '52, I never really knew them as I was only 7 at the time. I didn't start "fanning" the line until bit by the Narrow Gauge Bug in the early '60s and they were long gone by then.
