Following on Rick's remarks...
Trains from Denver arrived in Black Hawk from Denver with engine nose first. To reach Central City, the train would pull up through town, and then back on to the upper leg of the lower switchback (still with me?). Backing up, the train crossed the main street of Black Hawk on a trestle, contined some distance down-canyon but uphill (crossing the Running Lode trestle in the process), until it arrived at the upper switchback. It then pulled forward and headed off to Central City. Coming back, the process was reversed.
Judging from the amount of smoke the locomotive is generating and the direction the smokeplume is drifting, I surmise that the train is in the backing uphill mode.
The pictures below show the Black Hawk trestle crossing the main street; the second picture shows a train on thus trestle.
