The 80 ton Fairbanks Scale at Chama was restored by the Friends several years ago. I got a look inside and its really a balance beam arrangement like the old school scales with the weights and the balance beam, only the scale stops at 80 tons. I have attached a few pictures, but more maybe on the Friends Volunteer website for 2005 or 2006.
By the way, it still works!
